Heraldry and Coats of Arms
Note about Heraldry

Generally, it is presumed that Heraldry, pedigrees, Coats of Arms and patents are an adopted practice from the Norman or even the Saxon period, being imported by invaders and adopted by Irish and thus brought into the modern era as anglo centric practices and therefore somewhat non native in nature.

However, the ancient Irish manuscripts some pre Chrustian describe and refer to the emblems and flags used by clans accross Ireland as they arrived for battle. The O'Connor Clan used the symbol of an Oak Tree, and it was thought they carried oak branches or trunk to battle as a rallying and identification point.

Roscommon abbey for example, show the emblem of O'Connor over the grave of King Felidhm O'Connor in the form of an oak branch date 1265.
